About Wicked the Musical
Wicked the Musical started playing at the Gershwin Theatre in 2003 and has been one of the most successful Broadway Musicals in history. Currently the 10th longest running musical in Broadway history, Wicked has played over 5,000 shows since it’s launch.
The original cast won 3 tony awards and included soon-to-be celebrity Idina Menzel. With music written by Stephen Schwartz the play is based on a 1995 book, “Wicked, the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” written by Winnie Holzman. The book is an alternate telling of the backstory of Frank Baum’s legendary “Wizard of Oz”, and focuses on the history of the Elphaba (eventually know as the infamous Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda the Good.
Interweaving the storyline with the original Wizard of Oz plot (starting before Dorothy’s arrival and continuing on after her departure) the show provides an interesting look into an alternate telling of the classic drama.
The massive success of the show has given rise to several different productions, both in the US and Internationally, including at the Proctors in Schenectady, NY. It has proceeded to break box-office records all throughout the world, and continues to be one of the most popular musicals on Broadway today. Visitors and tourists visiting NYC flock to the box-office and TKTS to get their hands on the prized seats for each show.
The Proctors is one of the most popular venues in Schenectady, NY. You can find it’s address below:
